May 8, 2008 meeting of Valle Verde Rotary Club
Cindy Garcia presided. She reminded us that there will be a "Celebrate Rotary" affair in Tucson on May 17. In June there will be a party at Triple Play for Rotarians-more details later. The International Convention will be in L.A. this year. It will be a great opportunity for us since we are so close. Consider it! We are working on an English as a Second Language program for the girls at the Orphanage. Tom Cooke gave us a heads up on the mock trial-the State vs. the individual involved in Humpty-Dumpty's fall. Road clean-up under the supervision of Ray Lopez coming up (MAY 17TH). Heather Mougeot handled the Sgt-at-Arms duties with her usual aplomb. Father Mike Shay was our presenter. He is with the Green Valley Rotary Club and served in the recent past as their President. He is the pastor of San Martin de Porres in Sahuarita. He has had many experiences in his career as teacher, Provincial Superior in his Order of Salvatorans, extensive experience with addiction programs, a square dance caller and others, as they say "a man of many parts." He pointed out with sadness that it is estimated that 30,000 children die daily and with pride that Rotary immunized 2 billion children against Polio. He described the Rotary International. It is located in Evanston. Our Website (Valle Verde) has the contact numbers. The money that goes to Rotary is put into the Annual Fund or the Permanent Fund. The funds are escrowed for three years and the income derived therefrom provides the overhead costs of the administration. After the funds are activated the Annual fund contributions are credited to the individual member and count toward a Paul Harris Fellow award. When one reaches $1000 one becomes a Paul Harris Fellow. At more than $1000, one is a Benefactor. At $10,000 one belongs to the Bequest Society and so on. 50% of the Annual Fund contributions are returned to the District and from there may be allocated to projects within the district. The funds that stay with R.I. are used for a broad range of projects. The Permanent Fund is used to generate income which is used in many programs such as Ambassadorial Fellowships and many others. It is of interest to note that the idea of the R.I. foundation was conceived by A. Klumpf in 1917 and grew steadily until Paul Harrris' death. This accelerated the expansion. Our Health, Humanity and Hunger programs were stated early and have achieved remarkable results. It was an interesting program by an experienced and informed speaker.
May 1, 2008 meeting of Valle Verde Rotary Club
The attendance is beginning to reflect the approaching summer season. Cindy Garcia presided and Mary Fisher substituted for Heather. She was celebrating the marriage of her 54 year old sister. Gene Friesen told of the approval of the water project in Thailand (we are in for $1500). The Dress for Success went off very well. Thanks to the Browns for their annual support of the picnic was expressed Virginia Crabtree's office is closing in G.V. She will be working up in Tucson but will be able to stick with us! Tom Cooke reviewed the By-Laws he drafted for us. They were approved unanimously. Thanks Tom! A successful Essay Contest was held at the Sahuarita City Hall. Two of the presenters will move on to the District competition (Diana Jones was tops). This coming Thursday the Mock Trial will be held at 8:30AM in Judge Wright's court at the Government Office complex adjoining the Library. Phil Conklin announced the winner of the scholarship contest. A young man fascinated with auto mechanics wants to finish his technical training in a specialized program lasting 18 months or so . It is expensive but our scholarship should help. Tom Brown introduced John Knutson in absentia. He is a distinguished Rotarian from elsewhere who wishes to join our club. It was approved by the group. We raised the equivalent of $700 in food and cash for the GV Food Bank. Maureen McCarthy announced that she will be transferring to the noon club (we are too early in the day for her biorhythm). She did a great job of providing leadership and practical work in the Radio Auction. She told us about the ceremonious presentation of the $25,000 to the GV Fore District for the truck. She distributed awards to the members for their help. Dick Roberts, Beth Phillips, Carol Pfister, Cindy Garcia, Gwen Lamb, Rachel Malcom , Jeff Herdon, Jim Le Blanc, Madeline Cotsonas, Roni D'Eustachio, Volney Morin Mary Fisher and Peter Eichman were mentioned. Plaques were given to some large donors. We deffered the regular program until the 29th of May on end of life decisions (Volney Morin). It was a "neat" program , much camaraderie.
