July 22, 2010 Meeting of Valle Verde Rotary Club

Last Week's Program, by Tom Cooke

We heard from a couple of our Club members in the form of Icebreaker type talks. The contrast was interesting, because we heard from one of our newest members, and another who has been around for awhile.

Arleen Boyuls, a Rotarian of many years but who joined our Club only a few weeks ago, told us of her interesting past life.

Arleen was born in Lockwood, New Jersey, and spent her young life on a chicken farm near Tom's River, New Jersey. As a youngster, she worked on her father's farm, but spent an idyllic small town childhood. She worked hard to do her chores, but enjoyed playing an occasional prank on her father as well. She moved to California with her family, where she finished high school and attended college, earning a degree in geology. She worked as a geologist for some years, but transferred into a sales representative for her company, seeking geological consulting work for the firm.

Arleen came to Green Valley about 15 years ago, and became involved in various volunteer activities--including Rotary. She was previously a member of the GV noon club, where she served in many roles, including president. She has also held a number of positions with Rotary District 5500, where she remains active.

In addition to Rotary, she volunteered with Health and Human Services, the local Chamber of Commerce, and edited the newsletter for her HOA. She is currently employed with the United Community Health Center, an entity she first heard of through a talk at her previous Rotary Club.

Arleen learned at an early age through volunteer work and helping other she could make a difference. This an élan she continues to live with.

We're glad Arleen is in our Club.

Volney Morin, Jr. is a Valle Verde Rotarian of long standing, and has held many position in our Club, including that of Club president. He grew up on the Los Angles area, and graduated from Hollywood High School, where he was acquainted with and friends of such celebrities as the late John Ritter. He was fortunate enough to have been able to spend many summers on Catalina Island, as a camper and later as a camp counselor. He attended the University of Washington, working during summer months as a deck hand on a fishing boat in Alaska and off the Oregon coast. He became a lawyer, then got into the business of promoting trust and estate planning services. Some shortcuts he took in the business led to some disciplinary issues with the bar association, which required that he leave law practice and go into other lines of work. Some prior marital difficulties led to his present long term and solid relationship with his wife, Grace, and reestablishment of his ecclesiastical relationship with his church.

Volney has much appreciated the opportunity Rotary has offered him to serve. We're glad Volney chooses to serve through our Club.

July 15, 2010 Meeting of Valle Verde Rotary Club

 Program Notes for Last Week
July 15, 2010
by Joyce James

The club inducted two new members under the officiating of Membership chair Volney Morin along with President Ray Cook. New member Bob Juettner, who has served his Rotary in Anchorage Alaska, is relocating in Green Valley and Dottie Hill, Green Valley resident both enjoyed our Club handshake! Such a great start to our year - three new members this July!

We were honored to hear from Berdette Robison, Marketing Director of the Community Performing Arts Center located on West Continental Road. This facility was newly opened in 2008 in cooperation with a challenge grant from the Freeport mines and some Pima county participation including Pima Community College. The facility features state of the art sound and lighting. It has a rehearsal studio and set design studio and some spacious public areas for gatherings. The Art Gallery also adds interest with new artists showing their work monthly. The Community Performing Arts Center has attracted quite a variety of music, magic and one and two person shows. In addition, the Santa Cruz Shoestring Players consider the facility home for their productions. The August Green Valley Community Health Fair will be held at the Community Performing Arts Center.

Ms Robison told us that one big challenge has been to increase community awareness of the location of the facility and its availability for gatherings, shows and events. CPAC is not a GVR facility. Another challenge has been the loss of Pima County and Community College financial support. To address this shortfall, The Community Performing Arts Center has launched a member drive. Members will receive ticket discounts and invitations to members-only events among other perquisites, depending on level. Can you still have your name engraved on a brass seat plaque with a major gift to the center as one of the founding members? A portion of the member contribution is tax deductible and will support some of the operating expense for the facility.

The Center is planning to develop some theater geared toward children theater and eventually the Community performing Arts Center hopes to add a 500 seat auditorium.

Prices for a large variety of music, magic and comedy shows this summer is very reasonable. Schedules of upcoming events are printed in the Green Valley news, or it is available from the Center at 520 399-1750 or on the web at www.performingartscenter.org . Better yet, drive by 1250 W Continental Road and see the Community Performing Arts Center first hand.
